Greenwich Hospital

David Cox, 1783–1859

The Whitworth Art Gallery's holdings of British drawings and watercolours can be ranked, in importance if not in size, alongside the university collections in Oxford and Cambridge. The Laurence Harbottle Gift extends the Whitworth's existing holdings of the work of Brabazon, Cox and Holland, which are already quite extensive. The Portico of Greenwich Hospital joins a nationally important collection of more than 50 works by David Cox, making it an especially appropriate gift for the Whitworth.
