Gothic-revival ewer

This silver-gilt ewer was made for Samuel Rush Meyrick who built Goodrich Court in the style of the architecture of Edward 2nd's time and its decoration was heavily dependent on late medieval prototypes. The ewer was commissioned at the same time as a dish which is already in the National Museum of Wales collection. The ewer has a high handle and spreading neck with folded lip which is a Medieval and Renaissance form. It is decorated in a similar way to the matching dish. On one side if the ewer we can see two men in combat and on the other a robed figure holding aloft a flaming staff over a woman bearing a sword and shield.
