Fort Precincts, Collioure

Rudolph Ihlee, 1927

© The artist's estate/ Copyright holder not traced

Ihlee was great friends with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and it is probable that Ihlee encouraged Mackintosh and his wife to visit him in the South of France in 1923 where they stayed for a significant part of the next four years. This work has some affinity with Mackintosh's compositions with its use of foreshortened perspective, stark contrasts and simplification of the landscape and architecture. It is known that Mackintosh also painted scenes around Collioure including one of Fort Miradou.
