Art Funded by you

Flower Piece

Mark Gertler, 1937

The elaborate and richly coloured still life was inspired by objects in the artist's studio, and was painted just two years before his death. With its impasto and stress on pattern, it is fully representative of GertlerÂ’s late work and is a fine addition to Southampton City Art GalleryÂ’s holdings of his art, which spans his career. This work is one of two Gertler paintings bequeathed by Maurice Farquharson through the Art Fund. Extract of an article in the 2007 Art Fund Review written by Clare Mitchell.
