Flight

Kurt Schwitters, 1945

© DACS, London 2007

Flight is a very typical example of Schwitters' work. It is a construction made chiefly of wooden scraps upon a wooden base. The whole is enclosed by three mounts and covered with glass, which stands well away from the picture. The jagged form which suggests flight is placed with space in front of it. Below, the rich red of a disc gives warmth. Although it is small, the work is full of content and colour and has an exceptional appeal not only for those who admire the work of the artist but also for the layman. Schwitters spent his last years and died at Elterwater, and many visitors come to the Lake District to visit the barn in which he worked.
