This is one of Pissaro's comparatively early Impressionist paintings. Of all the Impressionist painters he was the most influenced by Corot, though the debt begins to disappear after the mid 1870s. Many people admire his early paintings most because of this. One of eight gifts and one bequest to three museums by John Hugh Smith through the Art Fund between 1940 and 1964.
