Embroidered sleeve bands

Unknown artist, c. 1800–1900

This finely embroidered pair of sleeve bands makes an excellent addition to Bristol's existing collection of Chinese dress and accessories. The designs are appropriate for summer with blooming lotuses symbolic of the season, as well as birds and dragonflies. Petals and leaves are filled in with minute seed-stitch knots, characteristic of high quality Chinese embroidery of the late 18th and 19th centuries.
