Eglinton Tournament Heraldic Shields

Samuel Pratt of Bond Street, 1839

These 7 shields are important objects that help build the picture of the Eglinton Tournament, a historically important event. The Eglinton Tournament was one of the most remarkable and influential manifestations of the Gothic revival in 19th century Britain. The Shields are beautiful objects that will sit well within the context of Dean Castle's important and extensive collections of arms and armour and musical instruments. Sitting alongside the Eglinton watercolours, also acquired with an Art Fund grant, and other objects they help to create a sense of the tournament for any future display and exhibition.
