Art Funded by you

Edward Herbert, First Baron Of Cherbury

, 1613

Courtesy Powis Castle and Garden

This iconic image of the English Renaissance shows Edward Herbert, First Baron of Cherbury, one of the most famous and ambitious men of his day.

Isaac Oliver was born in Rouen and moved to London with his parents in 1568. He studied miniature painting under Nicholas Hilliard, goldsmith and miniaturist to both Elizabeth I and James I. Oliver is now regarded as one of the first great Renaissance artists working in England.

Herbert was a major figure in the history of the Powis family, whose collection is now housed at Powis Castle (in the hands of the National Trust). The miniature has been in the family since its creation, and now joins the permanent collection at the castle.
