George F Henry, after 1904

George Henry was born in Ayrshire and studied briefly at Glasgow School of Art. In 1893 he visited Japan and the trip was financed by the Glasgow art dealer Alexander Reid. Henry responded to the exoticism of his surroundings with a series of brilliant oil paintings and watercolours. The subject matter often appearing in his later works. After he settled in London he became a respected Academician but his late works are in a less free and adventurous style. Part of the Robinson bequest of 75 works which were distributed among 16 museums in Scotland through the Art Fund in 1989.
