Jeckyll was commissioned by Barnard, Bishop and Barnards to design a cast-iron pavilion for the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. A particular feature of the pavilion's structural decoration were the brackets. For the spandrels of these brackets, Jeckyll designed a variety of 'Bird and Flower' motifs including this one entitled 'Whitethorn with Pheasants'.
