The painting depicts Debbie, her youngest child Shannon, her brother Billy and their dog, together in their back yard of their house in Barrow-upon-Soar, Leicestershire. Alan first got to know her as a police officer and Debbie is a challenging local character. Now a born again Christian Debbie plays a central role in village life and has built bridges between the police and vulnerable groups. Alan asked to paint her as a result of winning the National Portrait Gallery's annual Travel Award 2001.
