Polish-born artist Alicia Kwade’s Continuum is a marble and stainless-steel sculpture that is modelled on the form of a cresting wave.
Two of the peaks of the work are pierced by voids that are shaped like wormholes, which are hypothetical structures that connect two disparate points in the universe. Resting in the troughs of the sculpture are four spheres resembling images of the Earth taken from space. These spheres are made of sodalite, a mineral of a deep blue colour that contains striations in white.
The sculpture joins the collection of Towner Eastbourne, which has strong holdings of landscape and environmental art. The acquisition marks the development of a joint project between Towner and Eastbourne Borough Council to open Black Robin Farm, a new culture and education centre in the South Downs National Park where Continuum will be displayed.
This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
