Collection of Paintings on Glass
Thomas Gainsborough, 1727–1788
Twelve paintings on glass, and Gainsborough's Show Box including Open Landscape with Peasants, Cows, Sheep, Cottages and Pool (main illustration) and Cottage in Moonlight (second illustration). The box is a unique survivor of late 18th century experimental art. The box has moveable glass plates painted by Gainsborough which were lit by candles at the back of the box and viewed through a magnifying glass.
