Collection of nine prints

Wolfgang Tillmans, 2004–2009

TillmansÂ’ photographic work became known in the 1980s via the London based style magazine i-D. His early work, which featured portraits of people on the alternative club scenes in Germany and London, earned him recognition as a chronicler of his generation. This early experience of showing his work, not via the gallery system, but through print, was critical in TillmansÂ’ approach to photography as a medium. These are the first works by Tillmans to enter the collection and were selected after discussion with the artist. The nine works include two folded monochromes in acrylic box frames which are set against types of images familiar from the artist's earlier career, demonstrating both the continuity of TillmansÂ’ concerns and their evolution formally. Acquired with an Art Fund grant and a partial gift from the artist.
