Miao textiles are some of the most technically brilliant and visually stunning textiles to be found anywhere in the World. This collection of nearly 300 pieces, which includes over fifty complete outfits, is both ethnographically and artistically important. It represents an extensive archive of textile techniques both in printing and dying and in embroidery and appliqué and is accompanied by extensive photographic archives and fieldwork notes. Liverpool has a large and well-provenanced collection of Chinese Imperial robes and textiles. These textiles update the collection and underline the use of dress during important rites of passage.
