Collection Of 195 Cartoons And Works On Paper
Various, 1795

This important collection of 177 cartoons was presented to the Cartoon Museum as a bequest by collector Roger Woolnough. Among the works in the gift are cartoons by masters of the art, including Osbert Lancaster, MAC, Matt Pritchett, ET Reed, Frank Reynolds and JF Sullivan.
Two highlights of the collection are Frederick H Townsend’s Echoes of the Air Raids (1917) and Bernard Partridge’s An Interlude for Discussion (1938), both of which featured in the Cartoon Museum’s recent 175th anniversary exhibition of cartoons from Punch.
Historic works in the gift include cartoons by James Gillray and plates from Thomas Rowlandson’s Microcosm of London. Of particular note are rare cartoons by Caran D’Ache.
The Cartoon Museum opened in 2006 and collects and displays cartoon and comic art from the 18th century to the present day.
