Chamba paintings

Three pictures throw considerable light on the early history of the painting of Chamba, another Punjab Hill State which is known to have possessed a local school of painting in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The pictures suggest that the school developed as an off-shoot from Basohli, losing something of its burning ferocity but gaining a tranquil and open-eyed serenity. Part of a collection of 111 paintings belonging to Sir William Rothenstein purchased by the V&A.
