Chalcolithic Figurine

Cypriot, c. 3000 BC

© Trustees of the British Museum

A small female figurine in a cruciform shape. The figure may be a symbol of human fertility because the sexual characteristics have been emphasised, in particular the disc-shaped breasts and full thighs. Equally, it may represent its human owner as figurines of this type have been found in grave excavations.
