
Charles Dickens commissioned a portrait of himself and later one of his wife. Laurence was so proud of his portrait of the young Dickens that he produced a second version kept it with him until his death. This portrait was a pair to the portrait of Charles Dickens and the grant went towards the acquisition of both works.
