Carved Wooden Head of Buddha

Unknown artist, 1087–1185

The head is almost four times life-size and carved in three separate parts using a Japanese technique called Yoseki Zukuri. It was once painted, lacquered and gilded. The style is characteristic of late Fujiwara sculpture.
