Carlisle Cathedral and Deanery from the English Damside
Matthew Ellis Nutter, 1815–1825

Matthew Ellis Nutter was born and worked in Carlisle. This painting depicts the cathedral, deanery, and cupola of Saint Cuthbert's, and the west walls, with the river Caldew in the foreground. It is the only known, finished oil-painting of this period showing a particular aspect of the city rather than a panoramic view. The influence of Thomas Girtin, Richard Wilson, Joseph Farington, and the Norwich school are evident in the painting.
