The maker of this bust is the Florentine, Pompeo Caccini, who is primarily known as a painter. This is his only known sculpture and the sitter was one of the most celebrated Italian Baroque poets of the time. The sculpture is both signed and dated, a rare feature before the eighteenth century, and the bust represented a significant addition to the Museum's collection.
