Burgonet (Parade Helmet)

Filippo Negroli and brothers of Milan, c1540-1545

Embossed steel helmet in the form of a lions mask
Filippo Negroli and brothers of Milan, Burgonet (Parade Helmet), c1540-1545
Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge

The visor of this helmet is modelled in the form of a lion's mask; the skull is embossed with allegorical figures of Fame (right) and Victory (left) and trophies in the style of the High Renaissance.

There is a Greek motto inlaid in gold on the comb. The chin piece is missing. The helmet is likely to have had a distinguished original owner, as Negroli worked for both the Emperor Charves V and his son.
