Francis Dodd was a painter and etcher mainly of portraits and architectural subjects. He studied at Glasgow School of Art alongside Muirhead Bone, whose sister he married, and with whom he formed a lifelong friendship. This drypoint is the finest portrait of Muirhead Bone, of whose etched work the Hunterian Art Gallery has a significant collection, and represents one of Dodd's outstanding portraits.
