Beryl Cook’s painting Bingo shows a woman exuberantly calling out her winning card. She is seen holding a green pen and waving her full house in the air while neighbouring players look on. Mugs of tea are served at a counter in the background.
Cook, who lived in Plymouth from 1968 until her death, was a self-taught artist known for her warm and humorous depictions of everyday life. The people and places around her home city served as her inspiration, with the often underrepresented lives of working-class women and gay men featuring prominently in her pictures.
The Box has six paintings by Cook in its collection, including three works acquired in 1975 after her first exhibition in the city. Bingo expands its holdings by this local artist ahead of a planned exhibition to mark the centenary of her birth in 2026.
