Art Funded by you

Between Kilburn and Willesden Green, Winter Evening

Leon Kossoff, 1992

© The artist

Leon Kassoff was a member of a loose grouping of artist friends known as the School of London but was the only artist in the group to be born and brought up in London. Richard Calvocoressi, Keeper of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art at the time of acquisition, wrote: 'It is a particularly fresh example of Kossoff's urban landscapes in which racing clouds, swaying trees, hurtling and tilting railway carriages, and a cold afternoon light showing up occasional patches of bright colour all combine to give an impression of rapid movement and change. Paradoxically, this image of transience is realised in the most solid and permanent of materials, lending it a tangible and enduring physical presence.'
