Attic red-figure wine cup

Codrus Painter, 430 BC

Inside the cup is a circular painting representing a mounted Amazon in Persian dress and bearing Persian arms. The outside bears a frieze of satyrs disguised as athletes, two of whom approach youth accompanied on his journey by a lyre-player. Iconography possibly inspired by a lost comedy with a satyr chorus, appears to be unique in vase painting.
