Assemblage of material from an Anglo Saxon cemetery

Unknown artist, 6th–early 7th century

An assemblage of 34 items from the cemetery and a further 4 items from the site. It includes some finds of particular rarity and importance: 1) Paired cruciform harness strap-mounts are of great regional interest as there is a remarkable lack of horse graves from this period in Norfolk; 2) Shield boss mount is virtually unique and the quality of the surviving gilding underscores the prestige of the original Snetterton shield; 3) Pair of equal-arm brooches. The brooches show how localised styles of jewellery were appearing and can be compared to find-types like the horse harness fittings which became associated with an emerging elite.
