This octagonal Ch' ien plate is an excellent example of the service of Chinese armorial porcelain most probably commissioned by Alderman Beckford, father of William Beckford. Beckford Senior was Lord Mayor of London in 1763 and again in 1770. The arms and crest of Beckford are repeated four times around the rim of the plate.
