Paulus I van Somer, c. 1620

This fine Jacobean portrait reflects the move away from the flat style of earlier artists. Paul van Somer began to introduce the change, which reached its climax in Van Dyck. The artist, a Netherlandish painter who arrived in England in 1616, was almost immediately commissioned to paint Anne of Denmark. The Art Fund grant for this painting included four other Elizabethan and Jacobean full length paintings purchased from the Loel Guiness collection.
