An East View Of The Great Cataract Of Niagara

Thomas Davies, 1762

This is the earliest known view of Niagara Falls made on the spot, as well as the first accurate study by a trained draughtsman. It was made in 1762 by Thomas Davies, a Royal Artillery officer who studied drawing and draughtsmanship at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. The important watercolour, which features two indigenous figures in the foreground, now joins the major art collection of the National Army Museum.
