An Allegorical Monument to Sir Isaac Newton

Giovanni Battista Pittoni, Giuseppe Valeriani, 1727–1729

Allegory showing Minerva and the Sciences led weeping to the urn containing Sir Isaac's remains. In the middleground various predecessors of Newton on either side of a pedestal, on which are figures symbolising Mathematics and Truth. The ray of light striking through a prism across centre of the picture was intended to represent Isaac Newton's celebrated experiment with the analysis of light. The architectural setting was painted by D and G Valeriani.
