Alex Henderson & Charles, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline
Anthony Van Dyck, c. 1635

Two portraits by Sir Anthony Van Dyck. 1) Charles, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline (1615-1673, pictured) was one of the leaders of the covenanting army which opposed Charles I in 1639. He became Privy Councillor in England in 1640. He went into exile after the failed attempt to free Charles II but was appointed Privy Councillor again in 1660 after the restoration. 2) Alexander Henderson (c. 1583-1646, not pictured) was one of the leaders of the kirk of Scotland, heading the opposition to James VI's and Charles I's church policy for Scotland. This work is by or after Van Dyck.
