A view of the Inside of Mergate [sic] Pier

Samuel Scott, 1734

Scott visited Kent with William Hogarth in the year this drawing was made and the two artists published an account of their stay. This work depicts Margate pier with an array of river and sea-going vessels which would have been a common sight off the North Kent coast at that time. Scott details several types of vessel from the local type of fishing boat to a three-master which may have been a cross-Channel trader, and to the smaller vessels with bluff bows and leeboards correctly recorded for period, and possibly indicative of links with the Continent and Holland in particular.
