A Silver Hot-Water Jug

Paul Storr, 1831–1832

The design of this elaborate piece belongs to a late stage in the artist's career as a silversmith, and displays a combination of Rococo shape with naturalistic decoration. Although these features are by no means unusual in Storr's work, they are much less well known than his handsome neo-classical style of design. Each of the three compartments of the body of the jug is enriched with a naturalistic flower-spray. The handle is formed of a piece of branch joined to the body by a clump of leaves, and the knop to the lid consists of a flower and leaves, all well modelled and delicately finished with chasing.
