A man aged 38

Lucas van Leyden, c. 1521

© National Gallery, London

A painting of a clean shaven brown-eyed man dressed in a black cap, black coat and dark green gown. Sir Claude Phillips wrote that, 'neither Durer nor Holbein has painted anything more expressive than this still youthful dreamer of dreams, who but seems to look out at the spectator - in reality absorbed in the sad contemplation of his own soul.'
