A Lowestoft Porcelain Bowl

, 1768

This is a well-known piece of Lowestoft porcelain and one of exceptional interest. The number '5' on the base is traditionally associated with Robert Allen one of the most prolific and accomplished of the factory's painters. The bowl is interesting in being securely documented and unique in design, based on an engraving by Hollar, entitled 'Chinese Priests and Monks'. Many Lowestoft pieces have chinoiserie decoration, but the choice of subject and detailed treatment here are without parallel.
