A Lady

Sir Godfrey Kneller, 1715

Most of Kneller's drawings were made in connection with his painted portraits. At a client's first sitting in the studio, he would make a chalk study of the head. This would then be transferred, probably by eye, to canvas. The drawing was more an aid than a pattern to be copied exactly, and the client would return for further sittings. (Info from Tate website). Part of two gifts to Tate by Captain H Reitlinger through the Art Fund in 1922.
