A Hoard of Sceattas from Aldborough, Norfolk

Unknown moneyers, 710

This extremely rare hoard of 80 Anglo-Saxon sceattas (early English silver pennies) was unearthed by a metal detectorist between 2010 and 2017 in ploughed land close to Aldborough, Norfolk. It is the third-largest hoard of sceattas yet discovered in Britain.

The variety of coin designs in the hoard provides a key piece of evidence in dating this emergent English and Continental coinage, which was minted from the late 7th to mid-8th centuries.

Norwich Castle Museum holds a small number of sceattas in its archaeology collection andthis important local hoard now joins them there.
