A Dream of Nine Muses
Sir Edward Burne-Jones, 1850–1898

The Muses, draped in white, are grouped in a landscape around a white marble cistern which empties into a pool. In the centre the land rises to a mound against a blue sky. Two Muses stand together against the sky in the background to the right and two stand separately to the left. Within the curve of the bank one Muse sits to the right, turning her back, and one stands in the centre. The ninth one stands in the middle foreground, turning her back. One of five bequests to the Fitzwilliam and British Museum by Sir Sidney Colvin through the Art Fund in 1927.
