The earliest paintings of the Leeds-born Atkinson Grimshaw are still-life studies of fruit, flowers, birds' nests and dead birds. These pieces of direct observation were one way in which the young Grimshaw learned his trade. No evidence had been found that he took formal instruction from anyone.
