A cascade at the Villa d'Este

Henry Tonks, 1920

A sketch of a fountain in the Villa d'Este at Tivoli with a figure standing at far side of it, and a row of arches and trees beyond. Tonks came to painting from a successful surgical career. In 1893 he finally abandoned medicine on being invited to join the staff of the Slade School of Art in London, where he taught until 1930, succeeding Brown as Professor in 1919. He influenced such students as Augustus John, Stanley Spencer, Wyndham Lewis, Mark Gertler and Rex Whistler.
