David Bryce, c. 1865

David Bryce is a key figure in ScotlandÂ’s 19th century architectural history. He played a major role in developing the taste for the Baronial revival style through his designs for houses and public buildings. These previously unknown drawings of the Free St George's Church are fine examples of the way in which architects used highly finished perspectives to promote their work to their clients as well as to a wider public. Bryce exhibited these at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The drawings are particularly interesting as they represent variant designs for a scheme that was executed partly after David Bryce's death to the design of another architect. These drawings are the best source of information about the building as originally conceived.
