Acquisitions round-up: autumn 2017

Anya Gallaccio, Untitled (Stainless Steel Tree), 2015

1. Grinling Gibbons, High relief panel depicting Pslam 150 with King David playing a harp and Saint Cecilia playing an organ, c1668-1670

Fairfax House, York

Richly baroque, packed with detail, beautifully executed and conceived with inspiration, this panel is a glorious celebration of music - a theme that Gibbons returned to many times in his career.

2. Hilary Lloyd, Movie, 2015

Leeds Museums and Galleries, Leeds

This installation comprises a single-screen projected image and features raw and edited video footage which shifts between subject, perspective, and speeds. Among the subjects are flowers, foliage, buildings, street lights and other textures of the city.

3. Unknown artists, Watlington Hoard, after AD870

Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

This remarkable hoard of around 200 coins, seven items of jewellery and 15 ingots was discovered in 2015 in Watlington Oxfordshire. The hoard is thought to have been buried during the retreat of the Vikings in the late 870s.

4. Jean-Léon Gérôme, Portrait of Claude-Armand Gérôme, 1848

Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge

This portrait shows the artist's younger brother, Claude-Armand Gerome, as a swaggering student at the time of his graduation. His uniform, with its golden threads and glinting buttons, is that of the military Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. 

5. Ben Johnson, Crescent Wing, 2009

Southampton City Art Gallery, Southampton

Crescent Wing is a representation of the interior of the building of the same name at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Norwich.

6. Ben Nicholson, May 22 1950 (early morning from San Gimignano), 1950

Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds

In 1950, Ben Nicholson travelled to Italy by car with his friend Cyrill Reddinhough. They made San Gimignano their base for touring the country and it was from the window of the hotel La Cisterna that Nicholson created the picture. The picture shows a view looking across the rooftops of the town to the Tuscan hills below. 

7. Anya Gallaccio, Untitled (Stainless Steel Tree), 2015

Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester

The sculpture is a ghostly replica of a plane tree that once graced the park around the Whitworth Art Gallery.

Gallaccio used photographs and scans of the dead tree to make a digital model which was then cast in shiny stainless steel. The metal tree now stands on the site of the felled original as a memorial to its presence. 

8. Jez Dolan and Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Wolfenden and Polari: An Etymology and Sexy Collages and Untitled, 2015-16

National Museums Liverpool

Polari is a screenprint by Dolan which traces the etymology of the Polari language while Chetwynd's Sexy Collages and Untitled feature images which draw attention to LGBT histories across different art movements and periods. 

9. Various artists, The Rockingham Sculpture Collection, cfirst century AD to 1874

Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, Wentworth

The Rockingham Sculpture Collection (19 sculptures) includes the Ceres, a major full-length Roman statue of the 1st-2nd century AD, Faun with Kid (1751) by Joseph Wilton and Pomona (1874) by Laurence MacDonald.

10. George Henry Harlow, Midshipman (later Captain) John Windham Dalling RN, 1805-6

National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth

Harlow's portrait of John Windham Dalling shows the 16-year-old midshipman fresh from his experience serving in the Battle of Trafalgar.

11. Julian Trevelyan, Bolton, 1937

Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, Bolton

This collage shows the industrial town of Bolton with its factory chimneys and terraced houses. In style, it reveals the influence of the Surrealist movement, the result of the time Trevelyan spent in Paris in 1931 working alongside Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso.

12. Ivan Saltykov, Grachev cutlery set and scrapbook, 1890-95

Harrogate Museum and Arts, Harrogate

Given by Empress Alexandra of Russia as a christening gift to her goddaughter, Alix Allen of Harrogate, this cutlery set is decorated in champleve, a technique that involves depressions being made in the metal and then filled with coloured opaque enamel.

13. Charles Sims, Portrait of Sybil, Countess of Rocksavage, Later Marchioness of Cholmondeley, 1922

Grosvenor Museum, Chester

This study by Sims was for a larger portrait of the countess with her son, which now hangs in Cholmondeley Castle. Sims' lively free style and virtuoso skill at capturing a likeness can be clearly seen in the picture.

14. Dudley Adams, A Pair of Terrestrial and Celestial Pocket Globes, 1784

Herschel Museum of Astronomy, Bath

Made in his workshop in Cheapside London, the globes give a visual overview of the world and heavens as they were perceived during the last quarter of the 18th century.  

15. Sogen,Yuishinken kadensho, 1544

Cambridge University Library, Cambridge

This manuscript is one of the earliest surviving examples of a Japanese guide to flower arranging. It shows how flowers, branches and leaves should be arranged depending on the occasion and size of vase. 

16. Mark Neville, Bolan Market, 2011

National Army Museum, London

As official war artist in Afghanistan, Neville filmed Bolan Market in slow motion from inside a British Army 'Husky' vehicle, thus giving a soldier's perspective of the war zone and its local people.

17. Edwin Landseer, The Monarch of the Glen, c1851

National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh

This painting shows a royal stag, distinguished by the 12 points on its antlers. Landseer's virtuoso painting is particularly notable in the texture of the fur and the moisture around the nostrils.

18. Unknown artist, Egyptian Practice Piece, Fragment of the Pharaoh Akhenaten Or Nefertiti, c1352-36BC

Atkinson Art Gallery, Southport

This portrait fragment is an artist's preliminary sketch towards making a finished relief sculpture. It shows a member of the royal family from the Amarna, possibly King Akhenaten or Queen Nefertiti.  

19. Unknown artist, An Octagonal Brislington Delftware Plate, 1689

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Bristol

This tin-glazed earthenware plate was made in Brislington, near Bristol, in 1689. The border design of leaf motifs links it to chargers bearing royal portraits.

20. Leonard John Fuller, Sunday, 1925

The Geffrye Museum of the Home, London

Sunday shows a domestic interior scene in the mid-1920s.Two figures in the painting have been identified as the artist's wife, Marjorie, and son, John. 

21. Attributed to William Cooke and Robert Abrahams, The Northumberland Vase, 1862

Ironbridge Gorge Museum, Shropshire

The Northumberland Vase was made by the Coalport China Company and of the two painted panels, the one featuring fruit, flowers, musical instruments and doves is attributed to William Cooke while the other panel features putti tumbling from clouds and is often attributed to Robert Abrahams.

22. William James Müller, On the River Lyn, Devon, 1844

Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Bristol

Painted on a visit to Lynmouth in May 1844, the sublime scene shows boulders by the water's edge and green overhanging trees.

23. Patrick George, Vegetable Garden, 1999

Garden Museum, London

Patrick George was a keen gardener and a grower of vegetables and this scene in his garden at Great Saxham, shows the ground ready for a new season planting. It also illustrates George's late, looser style.

24. Eric Gill, Preparatory Study of Petra Gill for wood engraving entitled The Plait, 1922

Ditchling Museum of Art & Craft, East Sussex

This pencil study shows the artist's daughter Petra when she was 16 years old. The red chalk on the back of the drawing shows it was this study which was transferred to create the wood engraving The Plait. 

25. Unknown artist, Annular brooch, 1200-1400

North East Lincolnshire Museum Service

This medieval silver brooch was found using a metal detector in Scartho Lincolnshire. The frame carries an inscription which reads INLTMVNITAL, possibly a blunder of Amor Vincit Omnia. The pin has a narrow transverse ridge at one end and tapers towards the other.

26. Peter George Wilson, Sgian dubh, c1900

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery

The sgian dubh is a single-edged knife, worn as part of the traditional Highland dress. The silver decoration on the hilt and scabbard feature Celtic interlace, are reflection of the Celtic revival style of the 19th century. 

27. Barbara Walker, The Big Secret I, 2015

Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry

The Big Secret I is part of Walker's series Shock and Awe, a body of work which explores the contribution of black servicemen and women to British war efforts from 1914 to the present day.  

28. Frank Wright Bourdillon, The Judgement of Paris, 1887

Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance

The Judgement of Paris is a beautifully composed genre painting of a family scene in a cottage at Newlyn, Cornwall. It is the first picture painted in Newlyn and in its subject matter and square-brush technique, it clearly displays the influence of the Newlyn School of artists.

29. Herman Herkomer, Portrait of Sir Hubert von Herkomer CVO RA, 1887

Bushey Museum & Art Gallery, Hertfordshire

Hubert von Herkomer, a celebrated portrait painter as well as a teacher, is seen here wearing the academic dress of Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford. 

30. William Powell Frith, Sherry, Sir? and Did You Ring, Sir?, 1853

Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate

Frith painted the first version of Sherry, Sir? in 1851. The model was his housemaid, possibly Matilda Pudfield, who worked for him at the time. The same model appears in the partner painting Did You Ring Sir?.
