Things to do this bank holiday weekend

  • 16 August 2016

During this long summer weekend, we offer some event ideas to enjoy the – hopefully – good weather at.

1

Beatrix Potter: Play and Childhood

This rare exhibition shows 30 original drawings and watercolours by the beloved children’s illustrator and author, along with a selection of rare Beatrix Potter dolls, figurines and books.

In addition to the exhibition there will be a Beatrix Potter-themed adventure trail for the younger ones, drawing inspiration from her tales and characters.

2

Capability Brown Birthday Weekend

Celebrate the landscape designer and genius Lancelot "Capability" Brown's 300th birthday with a bunch of fun-packed activities, like 18th-century rules cricket and Georgian dancing.

Other activities to enjoy at the gorgeous working estate include seeing characters from Capability Brown's world, performed by theatre company The Pantaloons; 18th-century style tea and landscaped cake; and having a Georgian silhouette portrait made to take home with you.

3

Ricoh.imagine.change photography workshop

The Ricoh imagine.change. studio is set up for visitors to drop in and get creative. You can utilise the backdrops, outfits and different props to craft a portrait, fashion or 360 degree photograph.

The studio was inspired by Terence Donovan and the imagine.change. theme, and puts to use the Ricoh Theta – a digital camera that is able to capture 360 degree images. Your creations will be printed in the studio for you to take back home with you.

4

Watery Landscapes workshop

Experiment with watercolour painting at one of Edinburgh's main galleries and create your own landscapes. It's a drop-in session, so you can visit for a while and then enjoy one of the best collections of Scottish art.

5

Superhero Saturday

Put on your mask and ready your crime-fighting gear to help support the Macmillan Cancer Care charity by enjoying a day of fun at the museum. The little ones can come in their favourite superhero outfit and enter a costume competition.

They will also have the chance to add to their costume at the craft and face painting areas, as well as to immortalise themselves in the museum's selfie station. There will also be a superhero-themed trail around the museum to pass on facts about the different collections.

6

Stockton Summer Show

On both Sunday and Monday, the Preston Park Museum's grounds will be filled with displays and entertainment for the entire family. The schedule will include a craft and food stall market area, in addition to a funfair and attractions like a traditional Punch and Judy show.

A central arena will also be filled with displays and other events, such as horse stunt performances and the popular sheep and dog shows.

7

A Feast of Fabrics

Work with the BALTIC's artist Helen Pailing to discover new fabrics and textiles. Learn to use different materials to craft new creations to take back home as a souvenir. On 27, 28 and 29 August.
