Museum cafés your mum will love

  • 1 March 2016

Make a gallery visit not just a feast for the eyes, but a feast for the senses this Mother's Day.

1

Webbe’s

Situated on the coast, Webbe’s at Jerwood Gallery has spectacular views of the sea with an excellent menu to match. Webbe’s has a strong commitment to sustainably sourced food. The menu is filled with dishes made with local ingredients including fish caught by Hastings fishing fleet. Feast on a seafood plate with potted brown shrimp, crab, soused herring and prawn fritto misto, or tuck into the smoked haddock cakes with soft leek and kipper sauce.

2

Wedgwood Tea Room

Wedgwood is intrinsically linked to tea. Since the mid-18th century, Wedgwood teaware has been an essential part of the tea-drinking tradition. Visitors can follow the progress of the iconic ceramic pieces from the functioning factory (which offers tours) to the tearoom. Sip tea from specially selected Wedgwood ware, enjoy finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and, perhaps, a glass of champagne as part of the afternoon-tea experience.

3

Café Opus

Lauded as a ‘local gem’ by The Good Food Guide 2016, Café Opus’s top-class British classics are not to be missed. With a commitment to ethically sourced ingredients, the menu showcases some of Britain’s best, including fish fresh from Brixham Market and beef from the single-estate grass-fed herd in Aberdeenshire and Worcestershire. You can also enjoy a luscious afternoon tea, which includes a selection of sandwiches, cakes, scones, clotted cream and fruit preserve.

4

Tiled Hall Café

The Tiled Hall Café is a hidden treasure. On the Yorkshire-themed menu is a range of sandwiches, salads and soups, as well as an extensive range of cakes. And the café is also a treat for the eyes: tall panel windows flood the space with natural light, which brings out the colours of the stunning mosaic ceiling and brightly tiled walls. It has an unmistakable sense of grandeur.

5

The Orangery

The museum’s quirky theme runs through into the café and terrace. With tall, arched windows that fill the space with light, the Orangery overlooks a garden with Japanese-style plantings, a parterre, a pond and fan-shaped flowerbeds. Inside, it is an oasis in which to unwind and enjoy a delectable afternoon tea. Classic scones are served alongside freshly baked cakes, homemade jam and freshly whipped cream.
