1. The Reichenbach Fall, 2012
In series two of the BBC's highly popular Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes meets his arch nemesis Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott, on the roof of St Barts Hospital in the episode's chilling climax. IMDb rating: 9.6
2. The Hound of The Baskervilles, 1939
Sir Basil Rathborne plays Sherlock Holmes in this film version of the book, he played the private detective in 14 films until 1947. Clipped English accents, plush smoking jackets, deerstalker and cape – this is Sherlock Holmes on his best behaviour. IMDb rating: 7.7
For many Jeremy Brett is the ultimate screen Sherlock Holmes, in this adventure he takes on the case of the gruesome murder of a retired builder. IMDb rating: 8.4
4. Sherlock Holmes, 2009
Guy Ritchie's recent blockbusters star Jude Law as Watson and the energetic, frenetic Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes bringing gusto and a mischievous spark back to the character. IMDb rating: 7.6
5. The Blue Carbuncle, 1968
Peter Cushing played a theatrical Holmes on screen from 1958 until 1984 but most famously in the BBC series Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The Blue Carbuncle sees Holmes on the hunt for a priceless blue gem. IMDb rating: 7.7
