Applications are now open for the Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2014, the world’s largest and most influential museum award that rewards creativity and innovation.

The Prize identifies the UK's finest museums and awards £100,000 to the very best – the 2014 Museum of the Year. In doing this, the Prize champions what museums do, encourages more people to visit, and gets to the heart of what makes a truly outstanding museum.

The Judging Panel, announced today, will be chaired by Stephen Deuchar, Director of the Art Fund, and, for the first time, welcomes an international museum director. The judges are:

  • Sally Bacon, Executive Director of the Clore Duffield Foundation
  • Michael Craig-Martin RA
  • Wim Pijbes, Director of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
  • Anna Somers Cocks, Chief Executive of The Art Newspaper

Stephen Deuchar said, 'Despite the funding climate, UK museums and galleries are experiencing a golden age. 2013 has been a bumper year, with visiting at an all-time high: museums are more creative, welcoming, ambitious and successful than ever before.'

The shortlist of museums will be revealed on 23 April 2014, and on the same day specially-commissioned film and photography of the shortlist will be made public. The winner of the 2014 Museum of the Year will be announced at a ceremony on 9 July at the National Gallery, before an invited audience of leading figures from the UK and international arts and cultural scene.

Also on 9 July, we will hold our first-ever Museums Summit – looking at the future and culture of museums – and most importantly, what makes a truly outstanding museum.

Applications are being accepted until 10 February, and the Art Fund is inviting the public to tell us which museums they would like to see in the running – use the hashtag #MOTY2014 on Twitter, Instagram and on Facebook
