The Art Fund is supporting the Whitechapel Art Gallery to commission a sculpture by Rachel Whiteread for the façade of the Gallery. It is particularly fitting that the work will be by Whiteread, who has lived in east London for the past 25 years.
Remarkably this would be the first public sculpture by her in the UK, despite many prestigious projects abroad. The work – not finalized for a few months yet – will finally complete the façade of the Whitechapel, an important Arts and Crafts building dating from 1901 which was designed to incorporate a work of art that was never realized.
